OCCT is stress testing utility. It can test for stability and overclockability of a system. it can test also the performance of your power supply in handling the load you presently have. For now i'll show some graphs of how a power supply behaves with a certain load. The tests were done by running OCCT linpack test. You can also run the OCCT Power supply Test, which is more stressful to the system and willl make your PSU hot as OCCT will request the maximum power from it, especially when your load is near the maxumum load rating of your PSU.

I'll be using 3 power supplies for the test. the testing configuration is not high end , but the ordinary joe configuration . asrock alivenf6-vsta, 2x2gb ddr2 800, his 5450 512mb ddr3, seagate 100gb 7200rpm , and 1 x odd, 1 x 80mm fan and fan on the cpu cooler. Using neweggs calculator this will be about 276W.


in this graph we'll see that the 3.3v dipped immediately onced the stress load became higher. The power supply was not able to hold on to its rated voltage. graph was taken using an old Dynamo 400w. in most cases the power supply is stull usable but during really stress out cases, there is a tendency for hang ups. It must have performed better when it was newer , but power supplies loose their efficiency through time.


here is an example of a good power supply that was able to keep the regulation stable providing good 3.3v even when stressed out. this uses the FSP Super Sonic 550w ... the 3.3 volts remained within the specified. limits


here is another graph from OCZ ModXStream 600w. the 3.3v remained in its specified range.

Unfortunately the motherboard i tested only gave 3.3v and the VCore. If your motherboard returns 3.3v, 5.0v, 12v and the vcore then you can all check for each voltage stability. if all are within the specification, the graphs will not dip drastically (3.3v, 5v, 12v) compared to the graph i got using an old Dynamo 400w, then your power supply is working fine.

You might have noticed that though 3.3 volts remained in the acceptable range, they are a bit noisy, or rippling. This must be caused already by poor regulation of the motherboard, because all the power supplies tested showed almost the same RIPPLE or noise. good power supply and good motherboard power regualation should provide clean power and very little ripple.

When it comes to reading for the VCore, if it drops drastically during the stress test, it would mean that your cpu is not getting enough voltage , thus there is a big possibility of a failed stress test. this drastic drop of voltage is what they commonly call as the VDROOP. so to compensate for that drastic drop you go back to your BIOS and adjust your Vcore.
